The city of Elko (pop. 34,000) sits at an elevation of 5,060 feet. This high desert community experiences four pleasant seasons. Although the Ruby Mountains are a predominant landmark in the area Elko is probably best known as the Headquarters for the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering and its many other events. Visitors to Elko will find it an excellent stepping point for multitudes of adventure and cultural opportunities.

Elko has a good number of affordable lodging options available to travelers and adventure seekers. With a variety of restaurants to choose from that feature cuisine from home style to international flavor visitors are sure to find a palate pleasing meal.

Recreation


With two spectacular wilderness areas and thousands of square miles of open space, Northeastern Nevada offers limitless recreation opportunities for all skill levels and all seasons of the year.

Attractions

Ruby Mountains - Described by many as one of America's most beautiful mountain ranges, the Ruby Mountains offer endless miles of hiking trails along rushing waterfalls and fields of blazing wildflowers. Traversing the breathtaking 12-mile Lamoille Canyon Scenic byway, the mountains offer a perfect choice for activities ranging from a leisurely drive to a week-long backpacking adventure. At the end of the road lies the awesome Ruby Crest Trailhead, the ultimate hiking adventure.

Lamoille Canyon - This national Scenic Byway serves as the gateway to the Lamoille Canyon Scenic Area and Ruby Mountain wilderness. Sometimes referred to as the "Yosemite of Nevada," the canyon was heavily carved by glacial activity. A four-stop self guided auto tour with geology interpretive exhibits leads visitors past meadows full of wildflowers, abundant wildlife, waterfalls, and avalanche chutes.

Wildhorse State Recreation Area - Wildhorse Recreation Area is comprised of more than 120 acres of outdoor fun and adventure. boating, fishing, camping, picnicking, hunting, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and an annual ice-fishing derby round out the endless recreational options.

Western Folklife Center - Located in the historic Pioneer Hotel, The Western Folklife Center is dedicated to preserving the culture and spirit of the American West. Headquarters for the world re-known National Cowboy Poetry Gathering the center is the site of year-round entertainment.

Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) - The Ruby Lake NWR provides visitors with outstanding wildlife observation opportunities in a tranquil natural setting. More than 200 species of birds use the NWR as a resting stop or nesting area offering great opportunities for birding, photography and other adventure.

South Fork State Recreation Area - South Fork is a favorite among locals for all water sports, including boating, water skiing and fishing. There are also a variety of birding opportunities where visitors can view waterfowl in a natural setting. Camping is available in state operated developed sites.
