Hearst Mansion

Originally known as "Camp Hill," the wilderness of San Simeon offered a place for family members and friends of San Francisco Examiner owner William Randolph Hearst to "rough it" on camping trips. Despite elaborate arrangements with separate sleeping and dining tents, Hearst envisioned more comfortable accommodations. The result? Hearst Mansion.

The film Citizen Kane is a thinly veiled criticism of Hearst and the movie's main character's opulence is an understatement when compared to the lavish extravagances that lie within the current Hearst Mansion. The estate is an astounding 165 rooms on 127 acres of the San Simeon Ranch. Saying that there are 90,000 square feet, 61 bathrooms, 41 fireplaces, 19 sitting rooms and 56 bedrooms still does not adequately sum up just how large the Hearst Mansion is.
