Description

Oh, Downtown. Sixth Street, the live music capital of the live music capital of the world is here, although it may not be quite as revolutionary as it was a couple of decades ago. The Texas State Capitol, largest capitol in the United States, sits proud, and museums such as the Austin Museum of Art, the O. Henry Museum, and Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, keep everything very cultural. And if you’re a nature lover, you’re in for a rare treat; the flight of the Congress Avenue Bridge bat colony, 1.5 million strong, is an occurrence every summer evening and it’s free.

Austin’s hipness has always derived from being a college town, in many ways the college town. University of Texas is truly Austin’s heart. For some campus-style live music, take a seat in Cactus Café and listen to some acoustic guitar. If history’s more your scene, the Harry Ransom Center holds an original Gutenberg Bible and the LBJ Presidential Library is truly remarkable. The Drag is a shopping strip of a street, a good place to eat, and a good place to pick up slightly off-beat wares.

Attractions

This is the story of Texas told in three floors of exhibits, all large dioramas and interactive experiences....

No other presidential library charges no admission and none has a higher visitation rate (the no admission, mind, might help)....

Austin’s university is counted notable worldwide in (it sometimes seems) just about everything....

The Congress Avenue Bridge may not look like more than a bridge at first glance, but wait for evening....

A century in photographs, modern art in blocks and boxes, contemporary local work all together ....

Can the Texas State Capitol be any less beloved as it is giant? Texans do like to build the world big and this is the largest state capitol in the U....
