Description

The Clackamas River flows from the western slopes of the Cascade Range in northwestern Oregon. Nearly half of the river is designated as part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, protecting important fish and wildlife habitat as well as some excellent whitewater rafting.

Generally, the floatable portions of the Clackamas River are broken down into three sections: Three Lynx, Killer Fang, and the lower Clackamas, with Three Lynx being by far the most popular section.

Three Lynx

Perhaps the most popular stretch of whitewater in the state of Oregon, the Three Lynx run offers exciting intermediate level rapids in close proximity to Portland. Fed by dam release, the Three Lynx section can be run year-round.

Brilliant green waters whisk passengers down thrilling drops and wave-trains as the Clackamas winds through a river canyon lined with basalt bluffs and thick, old growth forests. Single day trips are available on the Three Lynx run.

Killer Fang

The Killer Fang run of the Clackamas is a powerhouse of whitewater action, renowned for its demanding intermediate-advanced level rapids. Big drops with technical maneuvers around large boulder gardens define this upper stretch of the Clackamas. One portage around New Killer Fang Falls, a stout class V, may be necessary.

Fed by winter rains and spring snowmelt, the Killer Fang run is boatable most of the winter until mid-spring. Previous whitewater experience is suggested before attempting a trip on this section. Single day trips are offered on the Killer Fang run.

Lower Clackamas River

The least intimidating of the Clackamas whitewater sections, the Lower Clackamas meanders through serene Milo McIver State Park. Clear water, small bubbly rapids and thick forest scenery make this an ideal and relaxing beginner-level day run. Single day trips are offered on the Lower Clackamas.
