Lake Lanier

Basics
Size:
61 sq miles
Max. Depth:
160 feet
Elevation:
1071 feet

Description

Lake Lanier is a massive body of water north of Atlanta, Georgia. The result of the Buford Dam project was both the lake and over 100 islands which were previously rolling hills. It was at one time an Olympic venue and is incredibly popular for recreation, especially in the hot summers of the southern United States.

Despite the popularity, Lake Lanier's size and shape make it difficult to ever feel crowded. Renting a houseboat pretty much makes that feeling impossible because no matter where you are, you can always move your lodgings to another island or cove. For fishing this is of course especially important.

There are a number of parks and campsites along the shore, the size of which speaks to the real strength of this lake. Lanier is 26 miles long and 2 miles wide, but its shore stretches 692 miles into offshoots and coves. The Port Royale Marina is in a fairly open area, so you're not likely to get lost if starting there, but if isolation is what you're going for its incredibly easy to achieve.
