You might know the land-locked “Cornhusker State” best for its fields of corn and seas of grass, but even if you’re the sort who goes in for major bodies of water and seafood there’s no cause to go hungry. After all, Nebraska boasts a sturdy agricultural infrastructure, known for its pork, beef, soybeans and, of course, corn. From late spring to early fall there is also an abundance of fresh produce to choose from at area farmers markets, from asparagus, carrots and green beans to blackberries, blueberries and cantaloupes.

For a quick lunch done Nebraska style, think about an Original Runza Sandwich from a lcoal Runza, a restaurant chain that found success first in its first sandwich - ground beef, onions and cabbage on fresh bread. Get one to go for a picnic in the grasslands, then swing by the closest farmers market in season to add crisp apples,watermelons and cherries to your spread. Looking for something local to drink? Try a cup of Kool-Aid, invented in Hastings, Nebraska and celebrated with an annual festival.

For something out of the ordinary, consider stopping over for dinner in Wilber, the “Czech Capital of the U.S.A., set an easy drive southwest of Lincoln. Sample traditional Czech pastries, kolace, or a good Czech beer and authentic sausage before steering back towards the open road.
